Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 as its latest mainstream smartwatch, bringing a stronger focus on health tracking, recovery insights and everyday intelligence. The biggest change is Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which enables more frequent heart-rate and heart-rate variability measurements and powers a new Readiness feature designed to give users a clearer picture of how prepared they are for the day ahead.

The Series 12 also introduces Apple’s S11 chip, improved workout tracking and new Apple Intelligence-powered features through watchOS 27. Apple says the watch can measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, while its redesigned sensing system provides more detailed health and recovery data without requiring users to manually start measurements.

Beyond health tracking, the Series 12 brings faster charging, longer battery life during outdoor workouts and a wider choice of finishes, including the return of a ceramic case. It is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, giving buyers a choice between a lighter aluminium model and more premium titanium and ceramic versions.

Design & Build

The Apple Watch Series 12 retains Apple’s familiar smartwatch design but gives buyers more choice in materials and finishes.

The watch is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Aluminium models come in Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Black and Space Grey, while titanium versions are available in Radiant Gold and Natural. Apple has also brought back a ceramic case, offered in Pearl White and Night Blue.

The 46mm models measure 46mm in height and 40mm in width, while the 42mm versions measure 42mm by 37mm. Depending on the material and connectivity configuration, weight starts at around 31.5g.

Aluminium versions use Ceramic Shield 2, while titanium and ceramic models feature a sapphire front crystal. Apple says Ceramic Shield 2 on the Series 12 aluminium model is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass used on the previous-generation Series 11.

The watch is also rated for 50-metre water resistance and IP6X dust resistance, making it suitable for swimming and everyday outdoor use.

Display

The Apple Watch Series 12 features an Always-On Retina wide-angle OLED display with LTPO3 technology.

The 42mm model has a 374 × 446-pixel display, while the 46mm version offers 416 × 496 pixels. Both have a pixel density of 326ppi and can reach 2,000 nits of peak brightness. The display can also reduce its refresh rate to 1Hz when appropriate, helping conserve battery power.

For everyday use, the high brightness should make the watch easier to read outdoors, while the Always-On mode means users do not need to raise their wrist every time they want to check the time or a notification.

The LTPO display technology is also important for efficiency because the screen does not need to operate at a high refresh rate when displaying static information.

Performance

The Series 12 is powered by Apple’s S11 chip, which features a 64-bit dual-core processor and a four-core Neural Engine. It also comes with 64GB of storage.

The S11 is not just intended to make apps feel responsive. It also provides the processing foundation for Apple’s newer AI and audio features in watchOS 27.

Apple Watch Series 12 supports Apple Intelligence-powered Siri, while Audio Intelligence features include Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Shazam and Sound Recognition. Some of these features require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and availability can vary by language and region.

There are no independent benchmark results available yet, so real-world performance claims should wait for hands-on testing.

Health & Fitness

Health tracking is one of the biggest reasons to consider the Apple Watch Series 12.

The new Health Sensing System includes a third-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor, a temperature sensor and blood oxygen sensing. The watch can also perform high-frequency background heart-rate tracking and monitor heart-rate variability.

Apple’s new Readiness experience uses health and recovery information to provide users with more context around their daily activity. Rather than simply recording workouts, the goal is to help users understand whether their body is ready for another demanding session or would benefit from recovery.

The watch also supports ECG, high and low heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep tracking, sleep stages, sleep score, sleep-apnoea notifications, cycle tracking and medication tracking. Availability of some health features can vary by region and regulatory approval.

For fitness users, the Series 12 supports running, cycling, swimming, hiking, strength training, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, skiing, snowboarding, rowing and multisport workouts.

Battery & Charging

Apple rates the Series 12 for up to 24 hours of normal use, while Low Power Mode can extend battery life to up to 38 hours.

Fast charging is another useful feature. Apple says the watch can reach 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes, while 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 12 hours of normal use under Apple’s testing conditions. Five minutes of charging can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.

Battery life will vary considerably depending on GPS, cellular connectivity, workouts, notifications and other usage.

The Series 12 still does not compete with specialist sports watches that can run for several days on a single charge. However, its fast charging helps reduce the practical inconvenience of daily charging.

Software & AI

The Apple Watch Series 12 runs watchOS 27, Apple’s latest wearable operating system.

The software adds new AI-powered capabilities, including a dedicated Siri experience, a more dynamic app interface and Audio Intelligence features. Apple says Siri is designed to become more personal and conversational, while users can continue conversations started on their iPhone through the watch’s Siri experience.

The watch also works closely with the iPhone for health, fitness and productivity features. Apple Watch Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later.

Connectivity & Special Features

The Series 12 supports Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.3 and Precision L1 GPS, with GPS + Cellular versions available.

Cellular models support 5G RedCap and LTE in supported markets and carriers. The watch also includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which enables supported proximity and device-location features.

Other features include Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Check In, Backtrack, noise monitoring and international emergency calling where supported.

Apple currently lists the Series 12 for pre-order through its India store, with availability starting September 18, 2026.

Competition & Alternatives

Alternative Why Consider It? Why Choose Series 12 Instead?
Samsung Galaxy Watch8 Strong Android integration and competitive health features Better fit for iPhone users and Apple’s ecosystem
Garmin Venu/Fenix series Longer battery life and strong fitness tools Better everyday smartwatch experience with iPhone
Apple Watch SE 3 Lower starting price Series 12 offers more advanced health sensing and premium materials

The biggest consideration is ecosystem compatibility. Apple Watch remains primarily an iPhone accessory, whereas Samsung and Garmin watches offer broader Android compatibility.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?

The Apple Watch Series 12 is primarily an evolution of Apple’s smartwatch rather than a complete redesign. Its biggest improvements are inside the watch: better health sensing, more frequent measurements, the new Readiness experience and expanded AI capabilities.

It makes the most sense for iPhone users who want advanced health tracking, fitness monitoring and a premium smartwatch experience without moving to the larger Ultra range.

The aluminium model at ₹56,900 is the most sensible option for most buyers. Titanium and ceramic versions are aimed at users who specifically want more premium materials and are willing to pay a substantial premium.

Best for: iPhone users, fitness enthusiasts, health-conscious buyers and people upgrading from an older Apple Watch.

Consider alternatives if: You want multi-day battery life, use Android, or prioritise specialist endurance-sports features.

Bottom line: The Apple Watch Series 12 is a strong upgrade for owners of older Apple Watches, particularly those interested in the new health-sensing and recovery features. For Series 11 owners, however, the upgrade is less compelling unless the new health capabilities or ceramic finishes are important to you.
