The Ultra 4 retains the large 49mm titanium design of the Ultra family, but its appeal is less about changing the basic design and more about improving what the watch can do when it is used for long workouts, hiking, navigation, water sports and recovery tracking.

Design & Build

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 maintains the large and rugged design that separates the Ultra series from Apple’s standard smartwatch lineup. It comes in a 49mm case measuring 49mm high, 44mm wide and 12mm thick.

The case is made from Grade 5 titanium and is available in Natural and Black finishes. The front uses a flat sapphire crystal display, giving the watch the scratch resistance expected from a premium outdoor wearable.

The larger body also provides room for a dedicated Action button, Digital Crown, side button, speaker, microphones and the additional sensors required for outdoor and diving features.

Durability is a major part of the Ultra 4’s design. The watch has 100-metre water resistance, IP6X dust resistance and support for swimming, snorkelling and high-speed water sports. Apple also says the watch has been tested to MIL-STD 810H requirements for conditions including temperature extremes, immersion, shock and vibration.

For divers, the Ultra 4 supports recreational scuba diving down to 40 metres and includes a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor.

Display

The Ultra 4 features an Always-On Retina OLED display using LTPO3 technology. It has a 422 × 514-pixel resolution and 326ppi pixel density.

The headline feature is its 3,000-nit peak brightness. That is particularly useful for outdoor activities, where a smartwatch needs to remain readable under strong sunlight.

The display can also reduce its brightness to as little as 1 nit. Combined with the low-refresh-rate capability of LTPO technology, this allows the always-on display to remain useful without continuously running at its highest power consumption.

The sapphire crystal should also provide better resistance to scratches than conventional glass, which is important for a watch designed for hiking, climbing, sports and other outdoor activities.

Performance

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is powered by the S11 chip, which features a 64-bit dual-core processor and a 4-core Neural Engine. The watch also includes 64GB of storage.

The processor provides the hardware foundation for watchOS 27, health monitoring, workout tracking, navigation and Apple’s newer AI-related features.

The Ultra 4 supports Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, along with Audio Intelligence features including Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Shazam and Sound Recognition.

There are currently no independent benchmark results included here, so it would be premature to claim a specific performance advantage over the previous Ultra generation. In practical terms, however, the S11 gives Apple a newer platform for its latest watchOS features and machine-learning workloads.

Health & Fitness Features

Health tracking remains one of the Ultra 4’s biggest strengths.

The watch features a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor, blood oxygen sensing and a temperature sensor. It also supports ECG, heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep tracking, sleep stages, sleep score and sleep-apnoea notifications.

The new Readiness feature is particularly interesting. It combines information from activity, training load, sleep and vital measurements to produce a score intended to show how prepared the user may be for the day.

Apple has also updated its pedometer model and machine-learning algorithms. The company says this can improve step counting and distance measurements during indoor workouts.

For serious athletes, the Ultra 4 supports training-load and workout-effort tracking, heart-rate zones, VO2 max, running power, cadence, stride information and multisport workouts.

Outdoor Tracking, GPS & Diving

The Ultra 4 is built around outdoor use, and its navigation hardware reflects that.

It features precision dual-frequency GPS, which is designed to provide more accurate positioning in challenging environments. The watch also includes a compass, always-on altimeter, Backtrack and offline map capabilities.

Hikers can use elevation information, custom waypoints and navigation tools, while cyclists can connect compatible power meters and monitor metrics such as cadence, speed and power.

Water activities are another major part of the Ultra 4’s feature set. The watch supports swimming and recreational diving, with a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. Its Dive Computer functionality is designed for recreational dives down to 40 metres.

Battery & Charging

Battery endurance is arguably the Ultra 4’s biggest practical advantage over Apple’s standard smartwatch models.

Apple rates the Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. It also supports longer workout modes, with Apple listing up to 18 hours of outdoor workout tracking, 25 hours in Extended Workout mode and 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode. Apple’s launch material specifically highlights the 45-hour Max Extended Workout capability.

Fast charging is supported, with the watch reaching up to 80% in around 45 minutes. Apple says 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 18 hours of normal use, while five minutes can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.

Actual battery life will vary depending on GPS, cellular connectivity, workouts, screen usage and other settings, so Apple’s figures should be treated as laboratory or usage estimates rather than guaranteed results.

Software & AI

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 runs watchOS 27, Apple’s latest operating system for the Apple Watch.

The software brings the new Readiness experience alongside Apple’s broader health and fitness tools. The watch can combine sleep, activity, workout and vital information to help users understand their recovery and training.

Siri also gains Apple Intelligence-powered capabilities, while Audio Intelligence adds features such as Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Shazam and Sound Recognition.

For Ultra users, the combination of software and hardware is important because many of the watch’s outdoor features depend on Apple’s integration of navigation, health data, workout tracking and watchOS.

Connectivity & Special Features

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, cellular connectivity and precision dual-frequency GPS.

It also includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip.

The cellular model supports 5G RedCap and LTE connectivity, along with international roaming. Other notable hardware includes the programmable Action button, dual speakers, three-microphone array, siren and torch.

Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Backtrack and Check In further strengthen the watch’s safety-focused positioning.

Price & Availability in India

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at ₹1,09,900 in India, including taxes.

Apple offers different Ultra 4 configurations depending on the selected band. The core watch hardware remains the same, while the band changes according to the intended use and design.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 Configuration Intended Use Colour India Price
Alpine Loop Outdoor adventure and hiking Desert ₹1,09,900
Trail Loop Sports and workouts Sand ₹1,09,900
Ocean Band Water sports and recreational diving Translucent Grey ₹1,09,900
Titanium Milanese Loop Ocean activities and everyday wear Natural ₹1,24,900

The Alpine Loop is aimed at hiking and outdoor adventures, while the Trail Loop is designed for sports and workouts. The Ocean Band is intended for water sports and recreational diving.

The Titanium Milanese Loop is the premium option at ₹1,24,900 and is designed to combine the Ultra’s outdoor character with a more refined appearance.

Importantly, Desert, Sand and Translucent Grey refer to the band colours, not the watch case colours. The Ultra 4 itself is available in Natural and Black.

Apple has announced the Ultra 4 as available from September 18, 2026. The company’s launch page also lists the Ultra 4 among its new products available from that date.

Eligible buyers can also use Apple’s financing options, including no-cost EMI and instant cashback offers on selected cards.

Competition & Alternatives

Alternative Why Consider It? Why Choose Apple Watch Ultra 4 Instead?
Apple Watch Series 12 Smaller and more suitable for everyday use Longer battery and more rugged outdoor hardware
Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra Strong alternative for Android users Better choice for iPhone users and Apple’s ecosystem
Garmin premium outdoor watches Excellent endurance and sports-focused features Stronger integration with iPhone, Apple Health and watchOS

The Ultra 4 is not necessarily the best choice for every smartwatch buyer. Its value becomes clearer for people who will actually use its long battery life, GPS capabilities, rugged construction, diving tools and advanced workout features.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is designed for people who want the most capable outdoor-focused Apple Watch, rather than simply the newest Apple Watch.

Its biggest strengths are the combination of long battery life, rugged titanium construction, 3,000-nit display, dual-frequency GPS, advanced health sensors and dedicated water and diving features. The new Readiness system also makes it more useful for users who care about recovery and training.

However, the Ultra 4 is difficult to justify if you mainly want notifications, basic fitness tracking, sleep monitoring and Apple ecosystem integration. In that case, a standard Apple Watch is likely to offer better value.

Best for: Hikers, runners, athletes, divers, outdoor enthusiasts and Apple users who want maximum battery life and durability.

Consider alternatives if: You prefer a smaller, lighter or cheaper smartwatch, or you do not need advanced outdoor features.

Bottom line: The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is a specialised premium smartwatch rather than a simple upgrade for everyone. Its combination of endurance, durability, health tracking, navigation and outdoor capabilities makes it one of Apple’s most capable wearables, but its ₹1,09,900 starting price means buyers should choose it for those specific strengths rather than simply because it is the newest model.
